“Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse” is the working title for a book project about passion, art, and living a good life, starring Sappho (7th c. BCE Greek lyric poet), Hildegard of Bingen (12 c. CE nun, writer, visionary, and musical composer), Emily Dickinson (19th c. American poet), and Frida Kahlo (20th c. Mexican painter).
Their art, and their lives, are defined by passion. Their art embodies a vision of lives well and fully lived, even – or especially – in the face of suffering. They found ways to thrive alongside illness, unrequited love, loss, and the limitations that women faced in each of their societies. These artists make us feel alive. That’s something we all hunger for, especially when more and more of our time is spent on line.
Because the book doesn’t have any horses, or an apocalypse (unless you count the close-to-apocalyptic fandom of some of these artists’ admirers), “Four Horsewomen” is probably not going to be the title of the actual book.
