About Me

Reading and writing help us do a better job at being human, especially when we talk with other people about what we’re reading and writing. That’s how I’d describe my work as a Professor of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin, where I am an expert in ancient Greek poetry.

I write books and articles that are mostly read by scholars. I teach classes aboutancient Greek literature that range in size from 5 to 200 students. With my advanced Greek students, I co-produce a podcast called “Musings in Greek Literature.” I write essays on current affairs for publications in Texas and nationwide, often but not always on issues in higher education. Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse draws on all the different “voices” I’ve developed during my thirty years of being a professor, and a person.

When I’m not working, I read a lot for fun, especially mystery novels, biographies of intriguing or wacky people, and recipes for baked goods I want to make for my family and friends. I live in Austin with my husband and two cats.
